Mumbai Central, formerly Bombay Central, station code: MMCT is a major railway station on the Western line, located in the Mumbai, Maharashtra in the area known by the same name. It is one of the major halts for Local and Inter-City/Express trains respectively having separate platforms for them. Besides this, it is a terminus for many superfast trains including the world renowned Mumbai Rajdhani Express.
It is one of the five major Terminal stations in Mumbai while others being Mumbai CSMT, Mumbai LTT, Bandra and Dadar. Trains depart from the station connecting various destinations mostly across states in the northern, western and north-western parts of India. The station was renamed from Bombay Central to Mumbai Central in 1997, following the change of Bombay to Mumbai. The Western Railway declared that the station code would change from BCT to MMCT from 1 February 2018. In this regard, the station underwent a renovation.

MMCT History
The station was built after the government ordered the demolition of the rail section between Churchgate-Colaba due to the need for reclaiming land. It was so when the BB&CI was agreed to this in the 1870s, when it had extended the line to Colaba, when permission for the construction of the terminus was given but on a condition that in case of any further reclamation scheme, the railway company should shift its railway to any other place between Marine Lines and Colaba. It was given a notice about the directed demolition in 1920. The BB&CI could not do this until a new terminus was found. A new station of the name Bombay Central was completed on 18th December 1930, and Colaba Terminus went defunct after the 31st December of the same year.
Designed by the British architect Claude Batley and constructed by the Shapoorji Pallonji in 1930 in a record time of 21 months, the project was then costed at INR 15.6 million. The station opened on 18 December 1930.
Actually, when the station opened in 1930, The Times of India reported that the name Bombay Central was taken from New York City's Grand Central Terminal. It argued that the station should have been called Kamathipura since it stands at the end of that street. It said probably the reason the name Kamathipura was ruled out was because the area is a red-light district.
The Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway stretched from Baroda to Pathankot via Delhi. The railway station Colaba-Ballard Pier was inadequate to meet the mushrooming growth of people; hence, the government charted out plans for the creation of Bombay Central.
It is the current suburban route that ran to Colaba earlier. It was renamed Bombay Central (local) after the long-distance Bombay Central Terminus (BCT) was constructed on the eastern side. In October 2017, Western Railway declared that the station code would be changed from BCT to MMCT from 1 February 2018. The change of station code created confusion among ticket seekers who booked in advance through the IRCTC app in November 2017.
